Leeches are animals with suckers on both the fore and aft ends and which they use to suck up to 8 times their bodyweight in blood (5-15ml). Leeches secrete a fluid that prevents blood clotting, breaks up any existing clots, regulates blood pressure, strengthens the immune system and this fluid also has pain killing, muscle relaxing and antibacterial properties. Normally 5-7 sessions are recommended, though this can vary from person to person, and the number of leeches used vary too depending on the part of the body they are used on.
